Starved Rock was the first area we explored. This was last October (2016). It was also our first ever hiking experience together and would ultimately set the stage for the following adventures we would take - and are still taking. It was super crowded the day we went exploring at Starved Rock, which made us quickly realize it was the most popular park in the state of Illinois. With beautiful overlooks and rock formations we could understand the draw. Quieter, secluded areas are much more to our liking, however Starved Rock's beauty was a sight to see.

The unfortunate part of visiting popular locations is seeing the the lack of respect many people have of the space. Please remember spaces become popular because they have something special that is truly magical to see. Pick up after yourself, stay on the trails, don't write on the rocks and overlooks, basically don't be an asshole! We have learned a lot from our hiking experiences, so educated yourself on the best way to interact with nature.

Disclaimer: The exact number of locations throughout the state is still uncertain. Since there are several levels of authority ranging from federal to local it will take quite some time to determine specifics.
